The Winter Palace - Huaqing Hot Springs

Huaqing Hot Springs is located at the northern foot of Mt. Lishan in Shaanxi Province, 30 kilometers from Xi'an. According to history, construction of this imperial palace continued through the Dynasties of Zhou, Qin, Han, Sui and Tang. In the 6th year of Emperor Xuanzong’s Reign in the Tang Dynasty (747 AD) it was expanded on a massive scale by turning the hot springs into bathing pools and ringing the Mount with palace buildings, which were to be protected by an outer circular defensive wall. It was then renamed Huaqing Palace. In 756, it was reduced to ruins by the flames of war. Most of the existing buildings were reconstructed in the Qing Dynasty. Chiang Kai-shek used this palace as his headquarters when he was taken prisoner by Zhang Yueliang in 1936.
